This research project was funded by the National Mental Health Commission and conducted by The Men’s Table in collaboration with Partners in Practice.
Mental health problems and social isolation are related, and both affect a growing number of Australians, and these two factors are related. Men are less likely than women to maintain social connection or to seek professional help for health concerns. Men are
thought to be reticent about help-seeking and are reluctant to share
personal thoughts and emotions, yet there is little understanding of
how men really approach help-seeking.
This report presents our findings of an action research project that examined the opportunity a men’s peer support group environment may provide for men who are reluctant help seekers.
